HISTORY continued from page 19 Many people think you can just throw stuff in a box and go, she adds, but with museum collection “you just don’t do it that way.” Crystal says the plan is 3-5 years before the big move. But it helps, she says, to have the new administration in place. “They are much more positive towards the restoration/rehabilitation of that campus. So it is going to be significantly better for us now that we have the powers that be saying they will help in any way they can.” There are also plans to add to the current collection, once the move is underway. Crystal says the “Discovering the Rivers of Lewis & Clark” exhibit is a Smithsonian style collection. It has been donated to the Yankton museum because the benefactors like Yankton, and feel this is the place it should be. Until then, Crystal and her army of volunteers will stay busy organizing, cataloging and taking inventory on the current collections. Which will be no easy task from the way Crystal talks. “Unfortunately there was a period in the museum’s history when things were not labeled and documented properly,” she says. So they are trying to correct that now. If you would like to donate your time, or want more information on the museum, feel free to stop in or contact Crystal at the museum. It’s a great place to take the family. Even when you think you’ve seen it all, you find something new. ■ Story and Photos by Heidi Henson As seen on Good Morning America, The Dr. Oz.
