For Eighty Years

When you go to visit Elva Meyers, you feel like you’re in the presence
of a friendly superstar. Her modern, overstuffed, bright red couch and
plush side chair are reminiscent of a private Hollywood back room
lounge. On the walls are numerous guitars, awards, and sentimental
pictures of fun times.
Elva grew up on a farm near Utica, and didn’t go too far from home.
She settled with her husband in Yankton, and has been a resident
for over fifty years. Her parents had four children, but Elva was the
one that was musically inclined like her father. Elva’s dad played the
accordion in a Bohemian band in Utica, until he got married
and started a family of his own. Both of Elva’s parents were
extremely proud of their daughter and her mom would
hand sew many of Elva’s fancy costumes. Her parents also
accompanied her to all her
performances in the beginning,
when she was too young to drive.
Elva still remembers learning to play the
guitar at the young age of six. Her cousin,
Marie Brown, had won a guitar by selling
the most seeds for Gurney’s Nursery.
After Marie learned some basic chords
from her uncle, she taught little Elva
them too. Elva caught on quick,
and soon became very good.
Even though Elva can’t read
sheet music, she could play by ear and
tune her own guitar. This is something that needs
to be done every time the guitar is played. Fortunately, she
now has an electric guitar tuner. As little girls, Elva and Marie loved
